Message from Dean David Mohney, AIA, UK College of Design

Dear Members of the College of Design Community:

At the College Assembly meeting this past Monday (October 30), I announced that I would be resigning as Dean of the College of Design at the end of this academic year, effective July 1, 2007. I intend to spend a year in the Netherlands working on a research project and then return to UK as a teacher and scholar in the College of Design.

My decision is equally based on what I think is best for the College, and what is best for me. Academic institutions and design programs benefit considerably by change -- fresh ideas, new energy, different approaches to leadership. The College has made enormous strides forward in recent years, and the engagement of the faculty in creating a new future is a big part of that. It's time for that future to take its next step, and I look forward to being a part of it, but in a different position.

I am very proud of my accomplishments as Dean, most of which have been directed at engaging our College more directly in Kentucky and engaging Kentucky more directly in design. Any success I have enjoyed I share with the College faculty, staff, and students, all of whom have contributed to an inspiring and challenging work environment. They have been wonderful fellow travellers.

I have also found a wealth of support in towns and communities across Kentucky and around the world. There are any number of key people who have supported me, advised me, and assisted me in a number of ways. I have a huge debt to all of them, and offer thanks to all who created paths for our success. I look forward to returning to Kentucky in a new role that allows me a different platform from which to work, teach, and lend my ideas and expertise. There's a lot to look forward to, and I look forward to it all.

Kind regards,

David Mohney

Author Seeks Environmental Groups' Sustainable Projects

Award-winning Boston architect Keith Moskow AIA last year wrote The Houses at Martha’s Vineyard , published by Monacelli Press. This year Keith is working on a book focusing on sustainable buildings developed by environmental groups – those with a vested interest in practicing what they preach. Representative projects will be from the US and abroad. McGraw-Hill is the publisher. Any members who have recently completed the design and construction of such a project and are interested in having it included in Keith's book may send an initial submission by email, including a project description and low-resolution images no later than December 21, 2006.

Selected projects will be chronicled from design to post-occupancy evaluation with explanations of the trade-offs and rewards of this increasingly important approach to design and construction.

Please contact Keith Moskow directly at KM@Mosko wArchitects.com or 617-292-2000x28 with questions.
